Public Recycling Center
RethinkWaste’s Public Recycling Center (PRC) is where the general public can drive through and drop off recyclable materials in the associated containers and locations. Materials are only accepted from residential customers.
MATERIALS ACCEPTED FOR FREE DROP-OFF
- Batteries (car and household)
- Cardboard and Mixed Paper
- Cooking Oil (residential only, up to 15 gallons)
- Electronics (computers, TVs, cell phones, faxes, VCRs, etc.)
- Fluorescent Lights (residential only, 6 tubes per visit, must be less than 6 ft)
- Glass Containers and Jars
- Scrap Metal and Cans
- Medicine (non-controlled substances)
- Paint (latex and oil-based) (up to 10 gallons)
- Sharps (must be in a sealed container)
- Small Appliances
- Used Motor Oil (up to 15 gallons), Oil Filters, or Antifreeze (up to 10 gallons)

Transfer Station
The Transfer Station is used for the unloading and transfer of garbage, construction and demolition (C&D) debris, and compostable material from public and private vehicles. Materials dropped off here are subject to a charge.

Discounted rates are provided for the following materials that are recycled or processed for reuse:

Compost
Free compost is available in the Transfer Station for residents in our service area.
The RethinkWaste service area includes Belmont, Burlingame, East Palo Alto, Foster City, Hillsborough, Menlo Park, Redwood City, San Carlos, San Mateo, Unincorporated San Mateo County, and West Bay Sanitary District. Enter through Gate #1 and show proof of residency. Also available for schools and community groups.
